Rotherham Phoenix powered to the final of the Yorkshire silver trophy with a win over a Castleford team two leagues above them. The game began at a frantic pace with Castleford looking to put the home side away early, however stern defence from Jon Saddington and Andy Stewart repelled their attacks with some ferocious tackles, Phoenix kept their composure and continued to play the game they knew best, Scott Crookes was again outstanding in the loose and played through ankle ligament damage to help set an attacking platform for the backs to exploit. The outstanding Saddington powered his way through four tackles to put Phoenix infront before half time, Tom Jenkinson added the conversion as Phoenix looked good going into half time.
In the second half Castleford brought on a string of changes and the result were near amediate as their number 8 powered through four Phoenix defenders to score under the posts, with the conversion a formality Phoenix knew thay had a battle on their hands. The Rotherham back row was again outstanding as Richard Westran and Andy Stewart crashed the ball up the pitch, this was complemented by the impressive support play from both Dan Cadman and Mike Ward, who looked to every opportunity to blast the ball forward. A long range penalty from Tom Jenkinson edge infront and the Powerfull Chris Baldwin crashed over to extend the score. Castleford added a penalty to make the score 15-10 to Phoenix but they could not add another score, from good attacking possitions Dan Cadman foiled their line outs turning over the ball on numerous occasions, Phoenix rode out the last few minutes of the match to secure the win and to become the first Yorkshire 5 team to reach the Yorkshire Silver Trophy final. The tie is to be played on the 18th of May at a yet unconfirmed venue with the other finalist yet to be confirmed.
